5.4 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Islamabad, KP, Punjab, and AJK

Islamabad – August 02, 2025: A moderate earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale shook several regions of Pakistan early Saturday morning, causing widespread panic but fortunately no reported casualties.

According to data from the National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC), the tremor occurred at 2:04 AM PST with a depth of 102 kilometers. The quake’s epicenter was identified in the Hindukush mountain range of Afghanistan, a region known for frequent seismic activity. Tremors were also reported across parts of Afghanistan and Tajikistan.

Areas Affected in Pakistan

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, strong tremors were felt in Peshawar, Swat, Malakand, Nowshera, Charsadda, Karak, Dir, Mardan, Mohmand, Shangla, Hangu, Swabi, Haripur, and Abbottabad.

In Punjab, cities including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Attock, Taxila, Murree, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sheikhupura, Ferozwala, and Muridke experienced the shocks.

The quake was also felt in Mirpur and surrounding areas of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

Public Reaction and Safety Measures

Residents across affected areas rushed outdoors during the tremors, many reciting verses from the Holy Quran for protection. Panic spread quickly, particularly in urban centers, where buildings swayed for several seconds.

Authorities have confirmed that no damage to property or loss of life has been reported so far. However, emergency services remain on alert to respond to any aftershocks or related incidents.

The Hindukush mountain belt is a seismically active zone, often triggering tremors felt across Pakistan. Experts advise residents to stay cautious, follow safety protocols during earthquakes, and remain updated with official advisories from the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) and NSMC.
